The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, unveiled its first comprehensive Physicians' Outreach Initiative, NIDAMED, which gives medical professionals tools and resources to screen their patients for tobacco, alcohol, illicit, and nonmedical prescription drug use.

Innovative Community-Based Prevention Reduces Risky Behavior in 10-14 Year Olds Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
A randomized trial of Communities That Care (CTC), an evidence-based substance-use community-focused prevention system, showed significant reductions in the initiation of alcohol use, tobacco use, binge drinking, and delinquent behavior among middle schoolers as they progressed from the fifth through the eighth grades. The positive results, published in the Sept. 7 Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, demonstrate that community-based coalitions using customized evidence-based approaches can prevent the early initiation of substance abuse and delinquent behavior among youth.

According to a report from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a recent survey shows a "dramatic" increase in the number of older adults using illicit drugs, which "may require the doubling of substance abuse treatment services" for this population by 2020. And that survey didn't even include the legal drug — alcohol — which is the major substance-abuse problem for those 60 and older.

With reports of increased prescription drug overdoses in emergency departments, the nation's emergency physicians are issuing a strong warning to parents about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs, which are now the second most abused drugs, after marijuana.  Hospital visits caused by accidental and unintentional prescription drug overdoses went up 37 percent between 1999 and 2006, according to new data released by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Alcohol abuse is a bigger problem for Pacific communities than drugs, according to an Australian report, which links drinking to domestic violence and wide-ranging health problems. The Burnet Institute survey, commissioned by the Australian National Council on Drugs, found that alcohol was the key area of concern in the Pacific, some of whose isolated communities are among the most impoverished in the world.

QUEENSLAND has the highest number of illegal drug laboratories in the nation according to a disturbing report suggesting the drug culture is thriving rather than declining.
The report found 450 drug laboratories were uncovered in 2008-09, 148 in Queensland, while drug labs were overwhelmingly operating in residential areas.
